Can I Touch It?

Can I Touch It?

November 18, 2006

I've had it since you and I met,
In that sports arena in New England,
I never asked you for it, though I am grateful
I find it as real and comforting as a blanket.
Though its appearance is unknown to me.
Can I touch it?  Will you let me?

Since you gave it to me,
As a token of the things unseen it became for me,
A window to a world I couldn't ever dream up,
I know it now as footprints and handprints
Though your feet and your hands escape my sight.
Can I touch it? Will I understand it?

What you have done for me,
On that hill several thousands of miles from here
Paying my debt I could not possibly pay,
I'm convinced has changed my life.
Though the wood and weather are but tales.
Can I touch it? Will I know you?

What you've given me, you've given to others too,
The cloud of witnesses agrees as one
With you as its author and perfecter
It became my evidence I need to believe
And the conviction I need to embrace
To run with joy the race you've set before me.
I can touch it.  I can touch you.
