He Would've Called To See How I'm Doing

He Would've Called To See How I'm Doing

November 18, 2006

Some people come into our lives and stay for life.
Without a vow they remain with us in joy and strife,
Entering as strangers, they abide as friends
Freely sharing their lives and living in ours with us.

They call and become a part of our home.

One such person became a brother--just that close.
Mike befriended me and my family, each one of us.
He became an uncle to our sons, and to us a brother.
We were together for Sunday lunch, he was the other.

He called me up just to say "Hello."

Like all good friends, habits and patterns began to show.
We learned to love him as he is, as we began to know.
With good news and bad news he would be sure to ask about,
When my wife was hurt, he was eager to check how she was.

He'd call to see if he could help in any way.

In recent year, things began to turn for Mike,
What was once easy for him to do became struggle-like.
Pains followed pains then diabetes and loss of leg.
Deep sorrow tested his faith in Christ, some days he did not pass.

We'd call to encourage and to pray with him.

In due time ,the waves of life overwhelmed our brother,
With his choices and consequences beginning to smother,
Responses of faith grew weaker and fewer with sickness,
Yet our Lord's pursuit of him intensified with mercy.

Our Father called him to come.

Today Mike is absent from his ailing body,
He is present with the Lord--together with Jesus our Savior and God.
While my own aches and surgery remain part of today,
We groan, awaiting with all creation the redemption Mike now knows.

He would've called to see how I'm doing.
